During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Defying suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
