Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
