Unidentified Rosy Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Beach Prompts Concerns of Possible Algal Bloom

Officials in Tasmania are striving to determine a magenta ooze that has appeared on a isolated coast, with some scientists anxious it could be an algal bloom.

Extensive Appearance On Beaches

The rosy-colored ooze was found on a portion of a coastal area about 60km south of the city. A like substance has also been documented on parts of a nearby shore and a separate bay.

Examples Taken for Examination

Samples have been gathered and submitted to the environmental agency for examination. A representative commented that "algal blooms are a natural event in response to variations in minerals, temperature, precipitation or sunlight".

"The events are occasionally called reddish tides because the blooms can turn the water reddish," the official said. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with many species serving as a key source of energy for animals in the oceanic food chain."

"The most common cause of reddish water in these seas is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."

Algal blooms are natural events but their frequency has grown in recent years, partially due to global warming and pollution that combine to create nutrient-rich waters geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that normally act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a bloom, there is a quick expansion in their numbers that interferes with the proper operation of marine environments.

These events have been likened to marine infernos and can persist in growing as long as conditions are ripe. In more extreme scenarios, vulnerable aquatic environments can be destroyed as sea creatures is killed or deprived of oxygen, supplying more minerals for the outbreak.

Past Severe Bloom in another region

South Australia recently grappled with a severe algae outbreak along its southern shore after a string of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across thousands of square kilometres. The outbreak left swimmers with eye irritation and severe coughing and may have caused the death of up to a quarter-million sea creatures across hundreds of species, according to agency assessments.

Specialist Opinion on the Current Case

An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the beginning of the previous algal bloom commented, based on images of the local event, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".

"We have seen lots of these outbreaks around the island of late," she added.

The scientist stated the algae did not create harmful substances comparable to the species involved in the previous harmful algal bloom, but it does eat microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were in greatest danger.

"Typically one notices a outbreak of this algae after a bloom of something else, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she added.

Calls for Action and Community Health

Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the rosy slime in Tasmania, said it looked like the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and indicated the salmon farming industry was the primary suspect, citing like situations elsewhere.

"So Tasmania needs to deliver a clear message here, the government and the EPA need to act to this. We need to study the samples we've gathered and we need to notify the people here," she said.

The scientist said she had concerns for community health after experiencing a prickling feeling along her body while being exposed with contaminated seawater.

An advocacy organization has documented dead octopus and expired organisms being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist describing the event as an "natural disaster" and calling on the state premier to see and "assume command the reaction that officials must be doing".
